Wood flooring can establish much more than a surface. Its direction can lengthen a room, center a staircase, frame an entry, repeat a ceiling geometry, guide movement through an open plan, or become an architectural feature in its own right. Custom patterns make those relationships visible.
Herringbone, chevron, basketweave, and parquet are not interchangeable names for decorative flooring. Each is built from different geometry. The pattern determines piece dimensions, control lines, waste, starting points, borders, fabrication, installation sequence, sanding, and how the design responds to an imperfect room.
A successful custom floor begins by choosing a geometry that belongs in the architecture and then engineering the complete wood system around it.
Straight Plank And Running Bond
Straight plank is the foundation against which other patterns are understood. Boards travel in parallel rows, and end joints are staggered. The geometry is simple, but long sightlines expose poor selection, repeated joints, drift, and narrow perimeter cuts.
Running bond uses a planned offset that can resemble brickwork. A strict half-bond creates repeated joint lines and may not suit every wood-floor product. A more random stagger can create a quieter field while preserving structural separation among joints.
Straight work can be custom through width, length, species, cut, border, color, and board selection. Simple geometry does not excuse careless layout.
Diagonal Plank
Turning straight boards to a diagonal introduces movement without changing the plank format. The floor can direct the eye toward a view or make a compact room feel broader.
Every wall intersection becomes an angled cut, which increases waste and perimeter labor. Doorways, cabinets, islands, and room transitions require more planning. A diagonal field can also reveal how far a room is out of square because the edge pieces change width along the wall.
A border can create a clean frame between the angled field and irregular architecture, but the border itself must be designed around corners and openings.
Herringbone
Herringbone uses rectangular blocks laid so the end of one meets the side of another. The resulting zigzag steps across the floor without forming a continuous point at the center of each repeat.
Accurate block dimensions and square ends are essential. A small length or width error repeats through every course. Control lines establish the pattern axis and keep both legs balanced. The starting position should relate to the room center, main doorway, fireplace, island, staircase, or another meaningful architectural feature.
Herringbone scale depends on block length and width. Small blocks create energy and detail. Long blocks create a broader, calmer rhythm. The room should be studied at full scale because a pattern that looks balanced on a sample board may feel busy across a large open plan.
Double Herringbone
Double herringbone pairs two blocks in each leg. The repeat becomes wider and more graphic while retaining the stepped geometry.
The pattern introduces more alignment points and can amplify dimensional variation. Each pair must read as a unit, and the units must remain coordinated across the field. Species, grain, and color selection can make the paired structure subtle or pronounced.
Borders require careful proportion because a broad double pattern can feel compressed by a narrow frame or visually detached by an oversized one.
Chevron
Chevron uses pieces cut at an angle so their ends meet point to point, creating a continuous V. The eye follows those points through the room, making centerline accuracy especially visible.
Angles, lengths, and milling have to remain consistent. If one side of the V is slightly longer or the end cut varies, the center seam wanders. Common angle choices create different proportions, but the product and design should define the actual cut rather than relying on the pattern name alone.
Chevron typically creates more cutting and waste than rectangular-block herringbone. Site-cut material requires precise jigs and quality control. Factory or workshop fabrication can improve consistency, but site layout still determines whether the points remain centered in the room.
Point De Hongrie
Point de Hongrie is related to chevron and is often distinguished by its angle and historical proportion. Terminology varies among manufacturers and design references, so the geometry should be documented with drawings, dimensions, and a physical sample rather than approved by name only.
The pattern can create a refined, elongated movement when its angle, block size, and room axis are coordinated. Misunderstanding the specified angle can change both appearance and material quantity.
Basketweave
Basketweave arranges groups of short wood pieces to create the impression that units pass over and under one another. Small square inserts may separate the woven blocks, and contrasting species can make the structure more visible.
The pattern appears relaxed but demands consistent module size and orientation. A rotated unit, slightly oversized insert, or drifting grid becomes obvious as repeats accumulate.
Grain direction alternates frequently, which affects sanding. A machine traveling with one set of pieces crosses the grain of another. Final abrasion must unify the surface without dishing softer components or leaving directional scratches.
Brick And Weave Patterns
Brick-and-weave and mansion-weave designs combine framed rectangles, squares, or alternating motifs within a larger repeat. They occupy the middle ground between familiar basketweave and complex panel parquet.
Multiple component sizes create more machining and more ways for tolerance to accumulate. The installer must track both the small unit and the large grid. Borders, columns, and room edges should terminate the repeat intentionally rather than cut through important motifs.
These patterns work well when the room has enough area for several full repeats. In a small space, the viewer may see fragments without understanding the composition.
Versailles Panels
Versailles parquet uses large square panels containing diagonal, woven, and framed elements. The panels create an architectural grid and can be fabricated in a workshop or assembled on site.
Panel size should relate to room dimensions. Ideally, the field avoids thin partial panels at prominent walls. A perimeter border or plank frame can absorb dimensional differences and center the full panel grid.
Every panel must remain square and consistent. Small errors at each edge multiply across the room. The subfloor must be exceptionally well prepared because large assemblies cannot conform to abrupt high and low areas without stress.
Chantilly Fontainebleau And Historic Panels
Chantilly, Fontainebleau, and other named historic panels use intricate woven geometry and numerous machined components. Pattern details vary across historical sources and modern manufacturers. The name alone is not a complete specification.
Approval should include a shop drawing, component dimensions, species, grain direction, panel size, border relationship, and sample. Historic reproduction may require field measurement from an original floor, archival research, and custom tooling.
The objective can be exact reproduction or a new floor inspired by historical geometry. The project should state which standard applies.
Original Custom Parquet
Original parquet moves beyond a known repeat. The design can echo windows, ceiling coffers, railings, a family motif, landscape, or abstract geometry. It may combine straight, curved, radial, and irregular components.
At this level, the floor is designed, drafted, machined, dry-fitted, installed, sanded, colored, and finished as one composition. Species are selected for both appearance and movement. Grain direction becomes part of the drawing. Repeats and centerlines are developed so the design can close accurately in a real room.

Pattern Scale And Room Proportion
A pattern should be judged in the room, not only from a close photograph. Block length, line frequency, contrast, border width, and panel size determine visual intensity.
Large rooms can support broad repeats and multiple layers of border. Small rooms may benefit from a quieter scale or a single focal element. Long corridors can amplify a directional pattern. An open plan may need one axis that connects spaces or several framed zones aligned to architecture.
Furniture matters. A medallion under a permanent dining table may disappear. A complex center pattern can compete with a strongly figured rug. Plans should include major furnishings and fixed elements before the floor is centered.
Borders And Field Relationships
A border can frame a patterned field, correct room irregularity, create a clean transition, or repeat architectural trim. It also introduces corners and intersections where errors become concentrated.
The border width should relate to both the pattern and the room. A feature strip can be subtle. Multiple bands can become an architectural assembly. At doorways, the design must decide whether the border continues, turns, stops, or becomes a threshold.

Subfloor Preparation For Pattern Work
Patterned floors contain many joints, directions, and small components. Subfloor variation that might be less noticeable beneath long strip flooring can disrupt module alignment or adhesive transfer.
The substrate must be sound, clean, dry within system limits, and flat. Control lines are only useful when the floor can sit on the plane they describe. Panel systems, small parquet, and mixed-media details may require specific adhesives, primers, or underlayment.

Waste And Material Planning
Waste is not one standard percentage. Diagonal perimeter cuts, chevron end cuts, pattern repeats, defects, species selection, grain matching, border corners, and future attic stock all change quantity.
Custom work may also require material for samples, jigs, mockups, and fabrication rejects. A rare species should be sourced with enough consistency to complete the project and retain repair stock. Ordering the field first and calculating the border later can leave mismatched lumber or insufficient long pieces.
A cut plan and panel schedule make the quantity defensible.
Installation From Controlled Reference Lines
Pattern installation begins with verified room dimensions and controlled axes. The crew establishes where the pattern must be perfect and where small dimensional differences can be absorbed.
Herringbone and chevron commonly work outward from a center reference. Panels may begin from a carefully selected grid intersection. Borders can be installed before or after the field depending on the design and fabrication method.
Dry fitting confirms that components close before adhesive is committed. Endurance can fabricate and dry-fit complex elements in its West Park workshop, then install from known site reference lines.
Sanding Color And Finish
Changing grain direction makes patterned floors demanding to sand. The process must level joints without cutting across small pieces aggressively, dish out softer species, or erase fine inlay.
Stain can reveal every scratch and glue mark. Different species absorb color at different rates, so a single stain may increase or reduce contrast unpredictably. Dyes, reactive treatments, sealers, and tinted finishes can build a controlled palette, but every layer needs full-system samples.
The finish must protect the composition without obscuring it. Sheen changes how the geometry reflects light. Endurance’s standard site-finished process uses one sealer coat and three full finish coats according to manufacturer film-thickness and cure requirements.
